You will never see a plump sprinter, and here’s why...

What if I told you that you could cut your cardio time down to 20 minutes, and in doing so, you would burn 9 times more fat and increase your metabolic rate?

It sounds like an infomercial for the next ‘too good to be true’ piece of home exercise equipment, doesn’t it?

Well, for a lot of people this is actually a reality. But, like most things that are too good to be true, there is one catch. The catch here is you will have to put in a lot more effort. The time involved is a lot less than most people are used to but the effort demanded is a lot more. So which is it, the choice is yours.

Before you make up your mind, let us consider the most popular approach to cardiovascular training.

“STAY IN YOUR ‘ZONE”

We have all heard it, it’s there on posters by the cardio equipment in most gyms, that bar chart that tells you, depending on your age, where your heart rate should be.
It will tell you not to let your heart rate get too high or you will burn less fat. How great is that? Put in a limited amount of effort for maximal results - now honestly when in life is that ever true?

What if I told you that this low intensity cardio may burn off muscle and reduce your metabolic rate? The more of this type of exercise that you do, the more efficient you become at doing it. Just like that super efficient car that is great on gas mileage, your body becomes that car and you become increasingly efficient when it comes to burning fuel. You need less gas to do the same number of miles. Given that analogy, which would you rather be - the hybrid car or the racing Ferrari?

How many people do you see every day, religiously doing their hour cardio, maybe they do it every day of the week and yet they never change? How frustrating is that?

Personally if I can read the newspaper or talk on my phone whilst doing cardio, I think my time would be better off getting an extra hour of sleep (one thing I never seem to get enough of), and it would do me a lot more good.

How many joggers do you see that are not lean? They can run a marathon, but still cannot see their abs. How many aerobic instructors do you see that carry extra weight, even with the hours and hours they teach every day?

Now, how many fat sprinters do you see? We see the overweight joggers but how many overweight sprinters? Finally, how many sprinters do you see chatting to their friends whilst on the elliptical? None, that’s how many.

So here is the deal, 20 minutes of cardio, burn 9 times the fat and increase your metabolism. Any takers?
